LOGIC HAS
IT!

By Captain Jonathan Steele
The Camelot has experienced many changes
in the past 60 days. There have been
major changes to the secondary leadership
of the club. As most of you may know David Woodard has decided to step
aside as Executive Officer and leave the ship. He has also taken the "Black
Knights" group from the Marine division on the ship. Longtime Camelot member
Captain Rick Alvey has accepted the position of Executive Officer. I feel
I could not have picked a more suited person for this important position.
Also Colonel. Mark Meece is now the commanding officer of the 2nd Marine
Strike Group. There is an excitement building within our club for some
really great things to come. Speaking of which, we are all set for the
10th Anniversary party/celebration in July, to quote a certain Trek celebrity
"This is going to be BIG, really BIG!". There is lots to read about this
issue, so go ahead and dig in!
News you can use from/about the crew!
This month we welcome a new member to
the U.S.S. Camelot.
Robin Fenner-Barbee found us through
our website. We haven't scared her off yet, and actually Robin fits right
in with the rest of us crazies. She even plans to attend Dover (her 1st).
If you haven't had a chance to welcome her yet, don't forget to do
so.
Captain Rick Alvey is our new Executive Officer (XO). Rick was given a Captain's Citation for all of his hard work and dedication to the club. We now have strong leadership in place for which promises to be a great year.
Lt. Cmdr. Mark Meece has received a Captain's Citation for all of the hard work he has done on the Camelot Web page and newsletter. At the April meeting Mark was promoted to the rank of Commander for SFN and the SFMC rank of Colonel. Mark has accepted assignment as commander of the 2nd Marine Strike Group on the U.S.S. Camelot NCC-2307.
The U.S.S Camelot 10th Anniversary Celebration is all set for Saturday July 22, 2000 at Dave & Buster's in Springdale. Everyone is invited to join us. Look for more detailed information elsewhere in this issue.
Don't forget club elections are coming up in July. Anyone wishing to run for ship's captain must be a paid up member and must submit a letter of intent to run to Captain Steele no later than the June 16th meeting. You must also make a presentation for your campaign to the ship at that meeting.
We have decided on the new ship design for the club. It is a variant of the U.S.S. Prometheus as seen in ST:Voyager. It is a modification of that design which we are calling Excaliber Class. We retain the older Chandley Class ship as a backup and utility ship to use when needed. Anyone wishing to submit ideas and/or designs for a new ship's logo. Please have something ready by the July 21st meeting.
For those of you who haven't ordered jackets or shirts yet with the new ship design and U.S.S. Camelot on it, and wish to do so, please contact Captain Steele.

Paramount Approves ST V Series
Apparently, Paramount TV Chairman Kerry
McCluggage has finally approved Rick Berman's and Brannon Braga's
Series V premise. This comes after several months of work that had already
been invested in
developing an acceptable Series V premise
for the studio -- which had included the rumored rejections of earlier
versions of the now-confirmed and other premises, and focus group sessions
that had tested three possible series concepts - a rumor that was confirmed...
by Brannon Braga.
The premise that has been reportedly
approved by McCluggage bears a strong similarity to the one that has been
in the news ever since November, namely the 'Birth of the Federation' premise
- with one
important twist. Apparently, the villain
of the series is someone from the 29th Century, who travels back in time
to prevent the Federation from being born in the first place. The reason
for this 'First Contact meets Future's End' twist is presumably to address
the complaint that the 'Birth of the Federation' premise lacks enough suspense,
because it obviously has a pre-established outcome.
According to the reports we received,
the studio is still looking at a Fall 2001 premiere, meaning Series V would
launch directly after Voyager's departure from the small screen.
JOHN ORODOVER CHALLENGES EXCELSIOR CAMPAIGN
Over at Simon & Schuster's Star Trek Books Board, another discussion started yesterday about more Captain Sulu novels, after a reader posted a message to the board about the increased interest in Series V being a Captain Sulu series. In response to that, Pocket Books Trek editor John Ordover posted that only a "very small number of very loud fans want Sulu." Then, after another reader argued this was not true, and that there was growing fan support for a Captain Sulu series and therefore also for Captain Sulu novels, Ordover posted the following message:
I'll cut a deal with you: You get 1,000 people to write me an
individual letter requesting a Captain Sulu novel - a streetmail
letter and no petitions or form letters count - and I'll do a
Captain Sulu novel. Address it to Captain Sulu c/o John
Ordover at the Pocket Address - and I'll do one.:)
John Ordover's original post can be
found here. The people at the
Excelsior Campaign then sent out the
actual address to which you need to address your letters:

Sci-Fi Channel Picks Up B5
The SCI FI Channel has acquired exclusive rights to the Emmy Award-winning SF series Babylon 5, the cable network announced Monday, April 3. The series will premiere on SCI -FI beginning Sept. 25 and will air Monday through Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
... SCI FI picked up the rights to all 112 hour-long episodes of the series, as well as four two-hour telefilms based on the show.
"Babylon 5 is one of sci-fi fans' favorite series. We are thrilled to be able to add it to our schedule," said Bonnie Hammer, executive vice president and general manager of The SCI FI Channel.
The series, which won an Emmy for visual
effects in 1993, was created by J. Michael Straczynski and was co-executive
produced by Straczynski and Douglas Netter. It stars Bruce Boxleitner,
Mira Furlan, Andreas
Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, Jerry Doyle,
Claudia Christian, Tracy Scoggins, Michael O'Hare, Richard Biggs, Andrea
Thompson, Jeff Conaway and Bill Mumy.
Jerry Doyle Takes Campaign to Trekkies
Babylon 5 star Jerry Doyle, who is running as a Republican candidate for a California congressional seat, took his campaign to his surest constituency over the weekend: fans at the Grand Slam Star Trek convention in Pasadena, Calif. Doyle entreated fans to help get the word out about his campaign in California's 24th district, where he is running as an underdog to unseat incumbent Democrat Rep. Brad Sherman in November.
"I need you to get me elected because my first act in Congress will be to put Babylon 5 back on in prime time," Doyle said to the wildly cheering audience. He added that he will rely on word of mouth among SF fans--something a professional political fund-raiser advised him against. "She said to me, 'If you think you're going to get elected to Congress on the backs of a bunch of sci-fi geeks, don't give up your day job.'" Doyle said. "So I say, 'Geeks! Rise up! Prove her wrong!'"
In a prelude to his campaign speech, Doyle alluded to issues that matter to him, including education and taxes, but didn't go into detail on his proposed policies. He said his campaign is creating a Web site at www.jerrydoyle.com, ... And he said he needed to raise between $750,000 to $1 million to mount a credible campaign. "The goal is to get to Washington so maybe we can clean up a few things back there," he said.

charitable functions.
Braga Stays on "Voyager"
Contrary to previous reports that Brannon
Braga is leaving Star Trek: Voyager to devote himself to the development
of the next Trek TV series, there's word now that the executive producer
is staying put... for the moment. A spokesperson for Braga provided a statement
to the Sci Fi cable channel's Sci Fi Wire regarding last week's Insider
story, saying, "Brannon Braga will remain in his current position on Star
Trek: Voyager until the new series requires a majority of his time. At
that point, [Voyager writer and producer] Ken Biller will take over responsibilities
as head of the writing staff for Star Trek: Voyager.

The space shuttle Atlantis is scheduled to make its first trip back to space since 1997. Atlantis was scheduled to liftoff at 3:52 pm on Tuesday April 25. In the past 2 1/4 years Atlantis has undergone a complete overhaul, especially to the cockpit. It now incorporates a "glass cockpit" which is a much more modern design. "Glass Cockpit" refers to the multiple readout screens that replaced the older mechanical instruments. The instrumentation on the shuttle is much more "user friendly" for the astronuats flying the shuttle. The STS-101 mission will dock with the International Space Station (ISS) to replace 4 of the 6 batteries, and transfer equipment to the Zarya Service Module, and other work to help prepare for the August mating of the Russian Zvezda Service Module . The ISS is now two years behind because of problems with the Russian part of the program. Permanent occupancy of the ISS is scheduled to begin in the fall by the Expedition One crew, William Shepherd, Yuri Gidzenko and Sergei Krikalev, who will be launched on a Russian Soyuz rocket from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan.

Finding references to the world of Trek in everyday life.
This one was found by Katherine Wilhite in the March 1999 issue of Boating Magazine. This is from a letter printed in the letters section of the magazine.
WHERE NO MAN HAS GONE BEFORE
Do you think it would be geeky to decorate my new boat with a Star Trek theme? We're talking imitation warp engines, life-size phaser models at the helm, and waterproof speakers spitting out authentic transporter noises. ("Beaming the chum down now, sir.") I'm thinking of calling the boat "Hull Breach". Do you think I could get a date with "Seven of Nine"?

Linda Gary (Qeylin)
It is with great sadness that we must report the passing of a longtime friend to all of us in Star Trek Fandom. Linda Gary passed away at about 1:00 p.m. on April 18, 2000. Surviving Linda is her husband, Steve, one stepson, Ed, two daughters, and three grandchildren.
Most of us met Linda after she became a member of the IKV Tohbaak crew. Some of you may know Linda by her uniforming and costuming abilities. Over the many years of their association with the Tohbaak, and with fandom in general, both Linda and Steve enriched many lives in untold ways. We count both as friends and will miss Linda very much.
Please keep the family in your prayers and/or thoughts.
If you'd like to send
a message to Steve, you may send it to Tom Jeffers
(CO of the Tohbaak) at
and we'll make sure that they get passed along.
